The Indian government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has greenlit the ambitious IndiaAI Mission. This landmark initiative, backed by a substantial budget of Rs.10,371.92 crore, aims to fortify India’s AI innovation ecosystem, aligning with the nation’s vision to harness AI for domestic advancement and ensure technological sovereignty.
The mission seeks to catalyze AI innovation by fostering strategic collaborations across various sectors, democratizing access to computing resources, enhancing data quality, developing indigenous AI capabilities, and promoting ethical AI practices. It aims to create an inclusive environment that encourages responsible and socially impactful AI development, thereby contributing to the nation’s socio-economic transformation.

The IndiaAI Mission will be spearheaded by the Independent Business Division (IBD) under the Digital India Corporation (DIC). It encompasses several pivotal components designed to address the multifaceted needs of India’s burgeoning AI sector:
- IndiaAI Compute Capacity: A high-end AI computing ecosystem will be established, featuring an infrastructure of over 10,000 Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) through a public-private partnership model. This initiative also includes creating an AI marketplace to provide AI resources and pre-trained models to innovators.

- IndiaAI Datasets Platform: A unified data platform will be developed to ensure seamless access to quality non-personal datasets, supporting AI innovation by startups and researchers.
- IndiaAI Application Development Initiative: Aimed at fostering AI applications in critical sectors, this initiative will promote the development and adoption of impactful AI solutions sourced from government departments and institutions, potentially catalyzing large-scale socio-economic benefits.
- IndiaAI FutureSkills: This initiative will address the educational gap in AI by incorporating AI courses at undergraduate, masters, and Ph.D. levels, and establishing Data and AI Labs, especially in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, to provide foundational courses.
- IndiaAI Startup Financing: It will provide streamlined access to funding for deep-tech AI startups, supporting the acceleration of futuristic AI projects.
- Safe & Trusted AI: Recognizing the importance of responsible AI development, this component will implement projects focusing on the ethical development, deployment, and adoption of AI, including indigenous tools, self-assessment checklists, and governance frameworks.
By propelling innovation and building domestic capacities, the IndiaAI Mission is poised to make India a global contender in AI technology, demonstrating the potential of AI for social good while creating highly skilled employment opportunities. This initiative not only underscores India’s commitment to technological advancement but also showcases its readiness to lead by example on the global stage.
