The Editors Guild of India has issued a statement urging the management of a Mumbai-based daily newspaper to conduct a “fair and transparent” inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death of journalist Satish Nandgaonkar.
In a statement released on Saturday, the Guild expressed deep sadness over Nandgaonkar’s untimely demise and extended heartfelt condolences to his family. The Guild emphasized the importance of addressing the allegations surrounding Nandgaonkar’s death through a thorough and impartial investigation.
“The Guild’s attention has also been drawn to several statements that have been issued in recent days relating to Nandgaonkar’s demise. The Guild urges the management of the concerned news organisation to conduct a fair and transparent inquiry into the allegations,” the statement read.
The Guild reaffirmed its commitment to promoting a conducive work environment in newsrooms and emphasized the importance of fostering relationships among colleagues based on fairness and mutual respect.
Additionally, the Guild highlighted its ongoing efforts to update the Code of Ethics for working journalists and editors in response to evolving challenges in the industry.
In its statement, the Guild called upon the management of all news organizations to prioritize the well-being of journalists and ensure that every journalist receives fair treatment and due process.
Satish Nandgaonkar passed away in Mumbai on February 28, leaving behind a legacy of journalistic integrity and dedication to his craft.
